With only about fifty copies left No Boat Required will be reprinted later this year. At the same time I’m revising the book, adding updates on some of the islands and a new chapter. I’m in the process of revisiting some of the islands, starting with Northey Island in the Blackwater estuary near Maldon, Essex.
The island is owned by the National Trust and a permit is required to visit. This still costs two pounds and details of how to buy it are on the Northey Island page of the National Trust website.
Parking is no longer permitted by the causeway and visitors now have to walk along the coast path from Maldon. It’s about a mile from the promenade.
Since I first visited ten years ago access has been restricted. It’s no longer permitted to wander at will but a short waymarked trail has been made.
I’ve been back to Burgh Island in South Devon, the last visited for No Boat Required.
This time my wife came too and we were caught out by the tide coming in close to the island first so had to paddle a bit. The water was far from warm! The alternative was to wait for the sea tractor but that would have been an hour and a half and lunch at the superb Venus Cafe was on the mainland.
I have selected some photos to add but my website system has decide to upgrade without asking me and change the way photos are loaded. Now it won’t load them. Why do IT people think everything has to be regularly changed? If it ain’t broke etc etc.
