Welcome to Peter Caton books

Essex Coast Walk describes Peter’s walk along the whole of the Essex coast – the longest of any English county.

No Boat Required describes Peter’s eventful travels as he visits the 43 tidal islands which can be walked to from the UK mainland. An updated second edition was published in 2022.

Stand Up Sit Down chronicles Peter’s visits to the 23 English Football League grounds that still have terraces and examines the arguments for and against the choice to stand at football.

In The Next Station Stop Peter revisits locations of childhood holidays on a 10,000 mile tour of Britain, discovering what it’s like to travel on our modern railways and comparing experiences with train journeys made over the last fifty years.

In his fifth book, Suffolk Coast Walk, Peter describes his walk along the whole length of the varied and beautiful Suffolk coast.

Peter’s sixth book, 50 Walks on the Essex Coast, is a walking guide describing routes covering the entire publicly accessible Essex coast.

Remote Stations describes Peter’s journeys to 40 of Britain’s loneliest railway stations.

Peter’s eighth book, another walking guide, Walks Discovering Lesser Known Dartmoor describes routes which lead ramblers to some of historical sites, views, waterfalls and abandoned dwellings which he has discovered in more than fifty years of walking on Dartmoor.

Dartmoor is also the theme for Peter’s ninth book. Dartmoor : England’s Last Wilderness . Peter uses the narrative of a varied selection of walks to discuss many of the issues and controversies affecting Dartmoor and asks the question, is Dartmoor England’s Last Wilderness?

Peter’s tenth book also has a Dartmoor theme and will be published in January 2026. My Father’s Dartmoor is a celebration of my father’s sixty years of Dartmoor walking and campaigning, adding a little to the historical record of the National Park and completing the book he was unable to finish.

Peter is working on another Essex book, Essex Coast Revisited, for which he is repeating his walks along the county’s coast and on another Dartmoor book.
